Unless you haven’t been out of your house all week, you may have noticed that we have had an excessive amount of rainfall in Southwest Florida these past few days. Roads are flooded, vacant lots look like marshlands, and most people have small rivers in their front yards.
If you are living in a home that gets its water from a well, you need to be extra diligent over the next few weeks.
Has Your Well Flooded?
If you have seen flooding near your well, you should have it tested before you drink it. Rainwater itself is usually fine, but when it collects on the ground, it usually includes rainwater that has run through other yards that may have fertilizer or chemicals in them, or across roads that may have vehicle fluids on it. As the water sits in your yard, bugs can land in it and lay eggs, animals may walk through it or drink from it and leave behind bacteria, and fungus can start to grow in it. All of this stuff can seep into the ground and contaminate your well. If the area directly around your well has been flooded, you should assume it is contaminated, and not drink from it until you have it tested.
Keep an Eye, and Nose, on Your Water
Even if your well does not look like it has been flooded, all this rain may still be causing problems. Sometimes it can take days or even a week for the contaminants in the surface water to make their way down to your well, or the aquifer that your well has tapped. Be extra vigilante with your water. If you notice any change in the way it looks, smells or tastes, you should have your water tested. You can’t be to safe with your families health.
Be Prepared For Future Events
Of course, the best thing you could do, if you have a well, is to have a full house filtration system installed. A full house filtration system, like one of our reverse osmosis systems, can make sure that all of the bacteria, and chemicals that are floating around in that storm water outside, does not seep into your well, and end up coming out of your tap. If you are already drinking bottled water, a home filtration system will save you money. Not only does it supply you with safe, great tasting drinking water, it also removes sediment that can clog water heaters, washing machines, dish washers and faucets. This will save you money on your electric bill (if you have an electric water bill) and it will save you money on repairs to your other appliances.
