I grew up in Southwest Florida and water was a huge part of my life. I learned to swim at the Cape Coral Yacht Club, and spent many a sweltering summer afternoon cooling off by jumping off the Cape Coral pier (and in some cases, into the canals off Aqualinda.) My Grandparents lived on Coronado and had a pool, so it was always a treat to visit them. I remember my Grandfathers signs on the porch “Welcome to our ool. That’s right, there is no P in it. Let’s Keep it that Way.” “Mac’s Swimming and Drinking Club”. Of course, as a child the drinking I did was mostly water. And in Cape Coral’s sweltering heat, I drank a lot of water.
When I got older, I would go away occasionally. Flying back into Southwest Florida was always a unique experience because as soon as the plane door opened you could feel the humidity envelope you. My wife would say that Southwest Florida was welcoming us home with a warm hug.
The Southwest Florida Summer is Here Again
Now we have reached another Southwest Florida Summer. The heat and humidity are back. The afternoon thunderstorms are starting to roll in, and we all are nervously keeping an eye on the tropics for any sign of a hurricane heading our way. As an adult, many days it seems like a mad dash from the air conditioned house, to the air conditioned car, to the air conditioned office. Sooner or later, however, we will all face the heat of outdoors.
In the heat of a Southwest Florida summer we all need to stay hydrated. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are very real threats, and the best way to avoid them is by drinking plenty of water. During heavy exercise in a hot environment, some doctors recommend drinking 2-4 glasses of water per hour. If you are buying bottled water, this can get expensive rather quickly.
Filter Your Water at Home
A better solution then buying bottled water is to have a home filtration system. Most bottled water companies just filter tap water, and then bottle it to sell to you. Granted, that is usually better then plain old tap water, but if you filter it at home it is even better. Home filtered water is as clean as bottled water is before it is bottled. Once bottled water gets put into the bottle, chemicals from the plastic bottle begin to leach into the water. How much contamination depends on how long the water has been in the bottle and how it has been stored.
But water filtered from a home filtration system is fresh and clean from your tap into your glass. It doesn’t sit in a hot warehouse for weeks or months before getting to the store, and then sits on a shelf for who knows how long before you buy it. And in the long run, it really is the cheapest, cleanest water you can get.
