If your home uses SWFL well water you probably already know that the water smells bad. You may have also noticed that you constantly need to replace shower heads. You may also prefer to take your clothes to a laundromat, and buy bottled water. All of these things could be because your SWFL well water could be destroying your plumbing.

Where Does SWFL Well Water Come From?

Most wells in SWFL tap into the Florida Aquifers. These are limestone formations known as a sequence of Paleogene carbonate rock systems that underlies the entire state of Florida and parts of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and South Carolina.

There are two main problems most people see as a result of their SWFL well water coming from the Florida Aquifer system. The first, is that water flowing through rock formations erode the rock and pick up microscopic particles from the rock. These minerals create what is known as “hard water”.

Hard water has the unfortunate side effect of leaving these mineral deposits behind when the water evaporates. These deposits can clog faucets, shower heads, and sprayers in dish washers. They can also build up in pipes, restricting the water flow, and in water heaters, reducing the efficiency of the water heater. Hard water can also wear out your clothes causing colors to fade, and fabrics to become brittle.

The second problem people have with SWFL well water is that rotten egg smell. The smell is the result of hydrogen sulfide gas and can result from a number of different sources. It can occur naturally in groundwater. It can be produced by certain “sulfur bacteria” in the groundwater, or in the well. In most cases, the rotten egg smell does not relate to the sanitary quality of the water. However, sometimes the gas may come from sewage or other pollutants. It is always a good idea to have the well tested for coliform bacteria and nitrate if your water starts to smell different. Sulfur bacteria are not harmful, but hydrogen sulfide gas in the air can be hazardous at high levels. If your SWFL well water smells like sulfur, you should take steps to remove the gas from the water, or vent the gas to the atmosphere.
