Over the past several months, there have been many reports on local news stations concerning the water levels in Cape Coral’s extensive canal system. The low rainfall levels that we have received this past year, combined with heavy use, has been a strain on the system. According to a report by the US Geological Survey, the principal source of freshwater for Cape Coral is the upper limestone of the Hawthorn Aquifer. This aquifer can be contaminated by both upward intrusion and downward intrusion. Upward intrusion, according to the report, is amplified in areas of heavy water withdrawals, and large water level declines.
Therefore, it seems reasonable that the low water levels in our canals would be causing both large water level declines and heavy water withdrawals from the aquifer system making it susceptible to upward intrusion.
